That works for some bodies, but it leaves a lot of tall divers choosing between a suit that is long enough but too loose through the waist or chest, and a suit with the right circumference that feels like it is pulling from shoulder to ankle.

A suit that is too short creates tension. You may feel it first when lifting your arms overhead, looking over your shoulder, or bending to put on fins. The problem gets bigger once you add a BCD, cylinder, and the normal movement of a shore entry. Constant stretch can also thin the neoprene slightly, compromise seams over time, and make the suit harder to don.

A suit that is too wide has its own downside. Excess space lets water circulate inside the suit, carrying away the warmth your body created. A loose suit can also bunch at the knees, under the arms, or behind the lower back. More neoprene is not automatically more warmth if the fit allows constant flushing.

For a full suit, the measurements that usually matter most are height, weight, chest, waist, hips, inseam, and torso length. Torso length is especially useful for tall divers because it reveals why a suit can fit your chest and still feel restrictive from shoulders to crotch.

To measure your torso, run the tape from the high point of one shoulder, down through the legs, and back up to the same shoulder. It may feel a little awkward, but it is valuable information when you are between conventional sizes. If a brand provides a torso measurement, use it. If it does not, compare height, chest, and inseam closely and look for a tall cut before simply sizing up.

Prioritize the dimension that causes restriction

If you have a long torso and average-width chest, do not assume a larger regular size will solve the issue. It may add room around your middle without adding enough usable length where you need it. Look for tall sizing first, then compare chest and waist measurements.

If your arms or legs are exceptionally long, pay attention to sleeve and inseam notes. A slightly short wrist or ankle opening is not always a deal-breaker, especially if your gloves and boots overlap well. Try a wetsuit on dry, patiently, and with the same care you would use before a dive. Use a plastic bag over hands and feet if needed, or a purpose-made donning aid. Do not yank hard on thin neoprene panels or pull from the cuffs. That is how good suits get damaged before they ever reach the water.

Once it is on, work the suit upward in small sections. Get the material seated at the ankles and calves before pulling it over the thighs. Then bring any extra material up through the hips and torso before settling the shoulders. Many people think a suit is too short because it was never fully positioned.

After zipping, stand tall and check the fit. You want close contact without painful pressure. Raise both arms, simulate reaching for your tank valve, squat slightly, bend at the waist, and rotate your shoulders. Take several full breaths. If the suit makes it difficult to inhale deeply or creates sharp pressure at the neck, chest, shoulders, or crotch, it is not a good fit.

In the water, a new suit often relaxes slightly, but it should not become baggy. A little water entering when you first submerge is normal. Repeated flushing at the neck, wrists, ankles, or zipper means the seals or overall cut are not doing their job.

Choose thickness for the water, not the calendar

A taller body does not automatically require a thicker suit. Water temperature, dive duration, depth, activity level, wind exposure at the surface, and your personal cold tolerance all matter. Two divers on the same boat can have different exposure needs, and neither is wrong.

For warm water, a thinner full suit, shorty, or combination of a dive skin and thermal layer may offer enough protection from sun, stings, and abrasion. For cooler conditions, a 5 mm or 7 mm full suit can provide more insulation, often paired with a hood, gloves, and boots. The trade-off is mobility and buoyancy. Thicker neoprene needs more weight at the surface and can feel less flexible, particularly if the fit is already marginal.

Pay attention to construction as well as millimeters. Glued and blind-stitched seams, internal seam tape, smooth-skin neck seals, wrist seals, ankle seals, and well-designed zipper flaps can make a meaningful difference in warmth. A properly fitted 5 mm suit with effective seals can feel warmer than a loose 7 mm suit that constantly flushes.

The best features are the ones that remove friction before and after the dive. For tall and bigger-bodied divers, easy-on design can be just as valuable as neoprene thickness. Consider these practical details when comparing suits:

  • Back zippers offer a familiar entry style, but should have enough length and a well-placed pull to avoid a wrestling match.
  • Ankle zippers can make it easier to pass long feet and calves through thicker neoprene, though they add another area to inspect for seal quality.
  • Reinforced knees and seat panels help when you spend time kneeling on a boat deck, shore, or dock.
  • A separate hooded vest can add warmth and extend the usefulness of a suit without forcing you into a thicker full suit for every trip.
There is no single best entry system. A front-zip suit can be more comfortable for one diver and frustrating for another. What matters is whether you can put it on correctly, remove it without strain, and move freely once it is on.

Do not overlook boots, gloves, and layering

A full wetsuit works as a system. If the suit legs are slightly short, taller boots with a good overlap can protect the ankle area. If the sleeves land high, longer gloves can help. Those accessories should complement a nearly correct suit, not rescue a suit that is fundamentally too small.

Layering is often the smarter answer for divers whose water temperatures vary. A thin vest, hooded vest, or thermal base layer can add warmth without changing the fit of your main suit too dramatically. Make sure the extra layer does not create folds at the neck, underarms, or waist. Those folds can rub, restrict movement, and create channels for water flow.
